Learn to Code by Solving Problems, 2nd Edition

A proven, problem-first introduction to Python that teaches beginners to think like programmers. Through engaging challenges, step-by-step instruction, and feedback on their solutions, readers learn to write code, solve problems, and build skills that extend beyond Python.

Learn Python by figuring things out.

Learning to code isn’t about memorizing commands. It’s about learning how to solve problems.

Learn to Code by Solving Problems, 2nd Edition takes a different approach to teaching Python. Instead of introducing programming concepts in isolation, each chapter begins with an interesting challenge drawn from real programming competitions. You’ll tackle problems involving games, sports, music, and everyday situations, learning the Python you need as you go.

You’ll learn to plan a solution, write the code, test your work, and figure out what went wrong when something doesn’t work. Step-by-step explanations show you not just what to type, but why your solution works.

And here’s the fun part: You can submit your solutions to online programming judges that test your code and give you feedback. Did your code pass? Great. Didn’t quite get it? Find out why, fix it, and try again.

You’ll learn how to:

• Break unfamiliar problems into manageable steps
• Write Python programs using variables, loops, functions, and data structures
• Plan solutions before jumping into code
• Test your programs, track down bugs, and improve your solutions
• Build problem-solving skills that carry over to other programming languages

No programming experience required. Just curiosity and a willingness to tackle the next challenge.

What’s New in the Second Edition

• New instruction on analyzing problems and planning solutions before writing code
• Expanded coverage of testing, debugging, and understanding the roles of variables
• A new chapter on using generative AI as a programming tutor, with an emphasis on learning rather than simply generating answers

The AI material is optional; readers can work through the book without using AI tools.
