Life tends to be thusdrip, drip, drip, drip, and then we ask ourselves, perplexed, how is it that we are soaked?

Estela leaves her mother back in the South to work at a familys home in Santiago de Chile, where she stays for the next seven years, cleaning the house and raising a little girl beset by anxiety, whose death we know of at the beginning of the novel.

Like a Greek tragedy, the tension mounts on every page with each character or element: the stray dog, the rats, Sirs unspeakable confession, Carloss arrival, the poison, the gun, even an outcome as powerful as it was inevitable.
